Ground Penetrating Radar for Concrete Scanning Projects in Toronto & the GTA

Being able to see into sub-surfaces is a must for anyone who is about to saw or drill into concrete. Becoming informed of the concrete’s thickness is also very useful under most circumstances. To easily accomplish both of these objectives, Kingdom Concrete Drilling & Sawing Inc. can complete any concrete scanning project with services for ground penetrating radar in Toronto. For over a decade, Kingdom concrete has provided this technology as part of our suite of services.

How It Works
Ground penetrating radar (GPR) utilizes high frequency radio waves in conjunction with electromagnetic energy to image concrete and other surfaces. Radar pulses are sent into surfaces to be scanned, and depending on how they get bounced back, an image is relayed that reveals what objects are underneath. Changes in material can also be detected, and any voids and cracks will be distinguished during the concrete scanning process.

A Safe Imaging System
Many of our clients who are unfamiliar with GPR technology are concerned about safety. We’re always happy to report that ground penetrating radar is not a source of hazardous radiation. It’s completely safe, and emits approximately one per cent of the power of a cellular signal. In other words, you face more risk from using common wireless devices than you do with GPR. Evacuation is never needed when concrete scanning is performed utilizing GPR technology. Hospitals, airports, and other high traffic institutions can all use GPR during any regular day.

Equipment Components
Technology for ground penetrating radar in Toronto is relatively compact. In most cases, it can easily be handled by a single person and will fit in the trunk of a car. It consists of several components, including:
  • An encoder—usually a wheel—that measures distance over the area to be scanned. At predetermined points it activates the radar signal.
  • The A/D converter that interprets and translates signals from analogue to digital. It’s the connective component between the antenna, the control unit, and the encoder.
  • A monitor/ PC, which allows images to be relayed in real-time and/or stored and processed later, depending on the exact device used.
  • The control unit, which is the central intelligence behind GPR technology. It directs all subordinate components.
  • The antennas, which transmit radar signals and receive reflected waves.

Ground Penetrating Radar Applications
Toronto structures can have a number of components embedded under their concrete surfaces. GPR scanning can help locate rebar, conduits, cables and pipes, to name a few. Concrete that’s cut without prior scanning could result in costly damages to necessary infrastructure or even injury. Therefore, the majority of concrete cutting, drilling, and sawing projects are often best tackled in conjunction with GPR.
